General Info

Cappadocia is both an ancient and modern name for a breathtaking region in Central Anatolia. This geological marvel encompasses the smaller triangular area from Urgup to Avanos and Uchisar. The valleys of Goreme, Ihlara, and Soganli are the primary locations where settlements developed in Cappadocia.

The most significant settlement was found in the region of Goreme. Today, in the open-air museum, one can see many churches that were carved out of the hard rock. It is believed that there are more than 600 rock-cut churches throughout Cappadocia. The early inhabitants, seeking refuge from Roman soldiers and later Arab invasions, carved these rugged rocks and built underground cities as a defense against attacks.

Although the lava eventually cooled, it solidified through compression from its own weight. The hard rocks, formed by the lava from three volcanoes that erupted throughout geological history, have taken on various shapes over time and continue to evolve, creating stunning features like capstones, pyramids, and conical formations with dark-colored tops known as fairy chimneys.
