Yozgat is a province situated 217 kilometers (135 miles) east of Ankara, notable for its rich history as a settlement area of the Hittites in Anatolia. Within its borders lies Alisar, one of the prominent cities from that era. Nearby significant sites that emphasize Yozgat’s central role include Bogazkoy and Alacahoyuk, although these are located outside the province.
A major highlight of Yozgat is the Basilica Therma, an ancient Roman bath over 2000 years old located in the Sarikaya district. It is among the rare baths worldwide where thermal waters still flow naturally, with ongoing archaeological excavations. The restoration efforts have been meticulously carried out, preserving its historical significance.
The current city of Yozgat was established by the Ottomans in the 18th century, founded by Capanoglu Ahmet Pasha, who was the "Bey" of the Turkmens at that time. His legacy includes the Capanoglu Mosque and Suleyman Bey's Mosque, both of which still stand in the city today.
Several traditional residences in Yozgat are also noteworthy, such as the Nizamoglu Mansion from the Ottoman era, now serving as a museum showcasing ethnographic artifacts. Other important houses include the Hayri Inal Mansion and the Zarife Nine Mansion.
