Cappadocia is both an ancient and modern name for a stunning region in Central Anatolia. It’s a geological marvel that spans the smaller triangular area between Urgup, Avanos, and Uchisar. The valleys of Goreme, Ihlara, and Soganli are the primary areas where settlements flourished in Cappadocia.
The most prominent settlement was in the Goreme area. Today, the open-air museum there offers a glimpse into numerous churches built into the rock, many of which were carved from solid stone. It is estimated that there are over 600 rock-hewn churches throughout Cappadocia. These structures were created by people who sought refuge from Roman soldiers and later from Arab invasions, carving out underground cities to protect themselves from attacks.
Although the lava has cooled, it solidified by being compressed under its own weight. The resilient rocks, formed from the lava of the three volcanoes that erupted throughout geological history, have gradually taken on different shapes over time and continue to evolve, resulting in stunning formations like capstones, pyramids, and conical structures with dark tops known as fairy chimneys.
