Things to Know

Duzce is a city situated midway between the major Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul. The D-100 highway passes directly through the city, while the TEM highway bypasses it from the outside.

The climate in Duzce features hot summers and chilly winters, with notable variations between the inland areas of the Western Black Sea region and the more arid Central Anatolian landscape. Among the region’s key crops are tobacco, corn, wheat, hazelnuts, and an assortment of vegetables.

The ancient town of Konuralp, located approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Duzce, was initially established in the third century BC. It served as a prominent settlement of the Bithynian Kingdom until 74 BC, after which it fell to Pontus and was later absorbed into the Roman Empire.

In the Roman era, Duzce experienced the influence of Latin traditions. Following the spread of Christianity, the city was renamed Hypium and came under the authority of the Eastern Roman Empire, which later became known as the Byzantine Empire after 395 AD.

Under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Duzce played a key role in supplying lumber for the imperial naval fleet and emerged as a major logistical center connecting Istanbul with eastern provinces like Sivas and Erzurum. By the 18th century, local merchants in Duzce took control of trade activities, attracting commercial exchange from across Turkey.
