Mamure Castle

Originally built by the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia on the location of a 4th-century Roman fortress, the castle was intended to defend against pirate attacks. It was later restored during the Byzantine period and by the Crusaders. In 1221, Alaattin Keykubat I of the Seljuk Turks took control of the castle ruins and constructed a larger fortress, incorporating parts of the earlier structures.

Later, the castle came under the rule of the Karamanid dynasty, a Turkmen principality. An inscription from Ibrahim II of Karaman dated 1450 reveals that the exact capture date is unclear but occurred during Mahmut’s reign (1300–1311). After Mahmut’s repairs, the castle was renamed Mamure. In 1469, it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire and experienced renovations in the 16th century, including minor additions to certain sections.

Spanning roughly 23,500 square meters, Mamure Castle boasts 39 towers and bastions linked by broad ramparts. The western part contains a courtyard with several buildings, including a minaret mosque and a Turkish bath. The southern side features a lighthouse that remains standing today.
