Lake Tuz - Salt Lake Lake Tuz, located on the central plateau of Turkey, ranks as the second largest lake in the country, covering an area of 1,665 km². It is also among the world’s largest hypersaline lakes. The lake receives water from two main streams along with groundwater and surface runoff, but since it lacks an outlet, brackish marshes have developed at the points where the streams flow into the lake. The surrounding landscape mainly consists of cultivated fields, except in the southern part where a broad salt-steppe experiences seasonal flooding. For the majority of the year, Lake Tuz remains very shallow, with an average depth close to foot. During winter months, salt partially dissolves in the fresh water from rainfall and runoff, which supports the region’s salt extraction industry. The three salt mines located on the lake supply 63% of Turkey’s salt consumption and support various industrial processes including salt purification and refinement. Lake Tuz was designated as a strictly protected zone in 2001, including the entire lake surface and its surrounding steppe within the conservation area. The lake hosts Turkey’s largest colony of greater flamingos, which gather on several islands located near the southern shore. It also serves as an important breeding habitat for greater white-fronted geese and lesser kestrels. Visitors exploring Lake Tuz should expect considerable walking and be prepared for wet conditions, as it can be challenging to keep dry. Although the lake is shallow, you may find yourself standing in water up to your ankles. Traveling along the lake’s length provides many excellent photography opportunities. The lake’s colors—ranging from tile-like hues to bright white—are caused by the presence of algae, which can tint sections of the water in blue or pink. The pink zones are especially breathtaking for photos, though they don’t appear all year round. To fully appreciate the stunning sunset over Salt Lake, it is advised to arrive early and wait. The vibrant colors create a truly spectacular and unforgettable ambiance.
