Sirince Village

Sirince Village

Şirince, situated approximately 7 miles from the ancient city of Ephesus and about 20 miles from Kuşadası, was historically a Greek Orthodox village. The name "Cirkince," which translates to "ugly" in English, was deliberately chosen to deter people from settling or seeking refuge there.

According to historical documents, the village has been inhabited since at least the 1st century AD, when Christian inhabitants of Ephesus fled to the area to escape persecution. It remained a Greek Orthodox community until the population exchange agreement between the Republic of Turkey and Greece in 1924, which led to the compulsory relocation of Greeks residing in Turkey and Turks living in Greece. Turkish families from the Kavala region settled in the village, while the departing Greek families established a new settlement called "Nea Efesos" (Νέα Έφεσος).

Sirince Village

In the early period of the Republic of Turkey, the village's name was officially changed from Cirkince to Şirince, which translates to "pleasant" or "lovely" in Turkish. For many centuries, Şirince's primary livelihood was agriculture, with a focus on growing olives and peaches. However, in recent times, the village has gained recognition for its distinct history and scenic charm, drawing a significant number of tourists.

Today, tourism serves as the main economic activity in Şirince. Numerous locals have converted their homes into restaurants, guesthouses, and shops. Visitors have the opportunity to sample the renowned black mulberry-seed wine, known for its sweet, dessert-like flavor, and purchase herbal products such as lavender tea and sage. The village once represented a fusion of Turkish and Greek cultures, and tourists can still admire restored Greek-style houses now operating as boutique hotels. There is also an abandoned Greek Orthodox Church dating back to the 19th century available for exploration.

In summary, Şirince is a picturesque village rich in history and natural beauty, which has evolved into a favored destination for travelers.
