Gümüşhane is a city located at an altitude of 1210 meters (3970 feet) above sea level, situated on a key route connecting Trabzon to Iran.


The city of Gümüşhane is famous for its historic caves, including the Karaca Cave and Akçakale Cave, which are found near a small village close to the city. It also offers numerous natural attractions like waterfalls and lakes. Additionally, Zigana Mountain provides skiing opportunities throughout the year for visitors.


During the Roman and Byzantine eras, Gümüşhane was known as Argyropolis. The name combines the Greek words "Argyros" meaning silver, and "Polis" meaning city. Later, the area came under the control of Arab, Seljuk, and Ottoman rulers consecutively.


Gümüşhane showcases a blend of both ancient and contemporary architectural styles. Noteworthy features include Ottoman houses dating back to the 1700s, mosques from various eras, as well as mausoleums, fountains, and tombs from the Ottoman Empire period. The city was founded along one of the oldest trade routes in history, the Silk Road, and hosts numerous fortresses constructed across different ages such as Canca, Akçakale, Edirne, Kov, and Kodil.


The Imera Monastery, an ancient Christian church from the 14th century, lies approximately 24 miles outside the city center. Other historical Christian sites in the area include the Metropolitan Church, Balcılar Church, and Hegios Georgios Monastery.
