The area’s geological makeup is primarily composed of Paleozoic-era rocks, which were shaped during the Miocene period. These formations include a mix of marble, crystallized limestone, and ancient limestone embedded within the metamorphic layers of the Tokat Massive. The areas where limestones are found on Akdağ have given rise to prominent karstic formations, which form the core of the Ballıca Nature Park. Both the iconic Ballıca Cave and the surrounding travertine structures are located within these metamorphic rock zones. What makes Ballıca Cave especially unique is its formation within a mixture of two distinct rock types. It lies in a layer of crystalline rocks—also called karstic limestone—which overlay metamorphic schists. Interestingly, the cave does not sit within a continuous karstic belt but instead developed within small, isolated limestone-covered rock masses. Despite this limited surface area, the cave boasts a remarkable interior, stretching 680 meters in length and covering more than 6500 square meters. Inside the Ballıca Cave, visitors encounter striking stalactites in various colors and unusual shapes. The cave features include rare elements such as cave pearls, beautifully layered onion-shaped stalactites, extensive curtain-like travertines, and serene settling ponds.
