Things to Know

Kirikkale, located in Turkey’s Central Anatolian region, gained provincial status relatively recently. Positioned approximately 80 km east of Ankara, the city was officially declared a province during the presidency of Turgut Özal in 1989. By 2016, the population had reached nearly 270,000, a significant growth from the mere 12 homes that existed in 1925.

The economic backbone of Kirikkale revolves around state-operated factories that manufacture military weapons and ammunition. Its steel plants are also notable for producing high-grade alloy steel and industrial machinery. However, due to its predominantly rural character, the city is not recognized as a prominent mining region.

Encircled by oak woodlands, the area supports a vibrant timber industry. While there are vineyards scattered across the region, much of Kirikkale’s terrain consists of steppe vegetation featuring native plants like sesame, clove daisy, and thyme. Moreover, the city acts as a regional hub for trading livestock and grains within Anatolia.
