Things to Know

Sivas is a province nestled in the mountainous region of central Anatolia, rich with a history that stretches back to ancient times. Throughout the ages, numerous tribes found refuge in this rugged terrain, leaving behind a variety of monuments and landmarks that today stand as important cultural heritage sites.

Historically, Sivas was a key crossroads along the caravan routes connecting Persia and Baghdad. It also served as the capital of the Turkish Danismend Emirate from 1142 to 1171, and later flourished as a center of learning and scholarship under the Seljuk dynasty.

A remarkable example of Seljuk architecture is the Izzeddin Keykavus Sifahanesi, a hospital commissioned in 1217 by the Seljuk Sultan. Its beautifully decorated painted tiles highlight the artistic excellence of the Seljuks. Other significant historical landmarks in Sivas include the Gök Medrese and Buruciye Medrese—both constructed in 1271—the Ulu Mosque of the Danismend Emirate, and the Cifte Minareli Medrese, built around 1301 and adorned with intricate calligraphy.

Sivas also played a vital role in Turkish history during the early period of the National Congress. Today, the Congress and War Exhibition Center preserves the artifacts and documents from this significant event, alongside showcasing local arts and culture.

Visitors to Sivas should not miss the ancient town of Divrigi, situated 165 kilometers (103 miles) southeast of the city. Originally a Byzantine settlement, Divrigi became a Turkish town in 1154 and grew into an important city during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Ulu Mosque of Divrigi, famous for its Baroque-style stone portals, has been recognized by UNESCO as a distinguished cultural heritage site and is just one of many historic treasures from this remarkable era.
