The House of the Virgin Mary was astonishingly identified thanks to the visions of Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German nun, in 1812. Through detailed dreams, Sister Emmerich traveled in her sleep to Jerusalem, where she witnessed St. John and the Virgin Mary journeying to Ephesus. She recalled a rectangular stone house built by St. John specifically for the Virgin Mary.
