Batman, located in southeastern Turkey, derives its name from the river that flows through the province, the Batman River. This river splits into two branches: one heads west towards Diyarbakir, and the other moves east toward the Tigris (Dicle) River, eventually merging with it. The area is rich in natural resources, making it a key center for oil production in Turkey, with the Batman refinery being the first of its kind in the country.
The earliest known records of the region date back to around 2000 BC, showing that the area was home to martial settlements. Over time, the province was ruled by various empires. The Arabs invaded around 700 AD, and in the 11th century, the region was attacked by the Seljuks, following a period of Mongol governance. The area fell under the rule of the Akkoyunlu and Safavid empires in the 1500s, before ultimately becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in 1514.
The 1950s saw significant modernization in Batman, largely driven by the region's abundant oil reserves. A crucial aspect of this progress was the establishment of a refinery and the construction of a pipeline linking Iskenderun to Batman.
