The region of Cappadocia is home to 34 subterranean cities, with Derinkuyu being the deepest among them. This underground city extends to a remarkable depth of sixty meters below the surface and features all the typical areas found in other subterranean cities, such as wineries, stables, storage rooms, cellars, dining halls, and churches.

Derinkuyu Underground City is famous for its distinctive second-level room, which served as a religious school during both wartime and peaceful periods. A 100-meter long tunnel connects the third to the seventh levels, where visitors can explore a cross-shaped church, a cemetery, a water well, and a ventilation shaft. Although the underground city consists of seven levels, not all of them have been fully excavated. This incredible city was capable of sheltering up to 5,000 to 8,000 people for durations of up to one month.

Derinkuyu Underground City is situated 40 km from Goreme center, 50 km from Urgup town, and 55 km from Avanos town. If you're planning to visit independently, you can take public buses from the Goreme bus station. First, you'll need to get to Nevsehir city center and then transfer to a bus going to Derinkuyu town. The journey takes just over an hour by public transport. The same applies to those staying in hotels in Urgup, Avanos, or Uchisar, who must first travel to Nevsehir city center before catching a bus to the underground city. The entrance fee for the underground city is 13 Euro per person in 2025, and its GPS coordinates are 38°22'22.7″N 34°44'01.5″E.
