Kahramanmaraş is a city with a deep historical background, originally known as Markasi or Maraj in ancient times. Throughout its history, the city experienced many invasions. It served as the capital of Gurgum, a Hittite kingdom around the 12th century BC. During the 1st century AD, the Romans named it Germanicia, and later the Ottomans renamed it Mer'as.
The Kahramanmaraş Citadel features an archaeological museum displaying remarkable Hittite sculptures. Important historical sites in the area include the Ulu (Grand) Mosque and the Tas (Stone) Medrese, both dating back to the 15th century. Additionally, Ottoman period architecture is evident in the Hatuniye and Haznedarli Mosques.
A famous specialty of the region is its unique ice cream, crafted from pure goat's milk and wild orchid roots harvested from the surrounding mountains. The area is also known for its intricately carved wooden furniture, traditional silver and brass handicrafts, and beautifully made silk products. Visitors are drawn to the region's natural attractions, enjoying activities such as hunting, fishing, exploring caves, and picnicking.
