Cappadocia’s Red Valley and Rose Valley rank among the region’s most captivating valleys. The Red Valley begins at Panorama Point in Ortahisar Village and ends at Cavusin Village. These interconnected valleys are dotted with traditional homes, vineyards, and fruit orchards featuring apricot and almond trees.

The valleys offer trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes. Some routes can be completed in as little as 45 minutes. The longest and most detailed trail, which takes around four hours, guides visitors to numerous hidden churches. One notable example is the Uzumlu Church, originating from the 9th century and still displaying some original frescoes on its walls.

Kolonlu Church stands out as one of the most fascinating churches in the mountain area. It is reached through a tunnel located at the back, near a pigeon loft. During the Roman era, Paganism was the dominant religion, forcing Christians in the region to hide in valleys to escape persecution and worship in secret. Kolonlu Church is one of these concealed churches; from the outside, it looks like a pigeon’s nest but opens into a spacious interior supported by columns.

Another remarkable site is the Hacli (Cross) Church, an 11th-century church shaped like a cross, adorned with beautiful frescoes illustrating Christ and the Lady of Mercy. The ceiling features a prominent cross decorated with historical marks, which gives the church its name: The Cross Church. Along the route in Rose Valley, you can find three Hacli Churches, each boasting three crosses carved into their ceilings.
