Aydinlar Church

Aydinlar Church

The Church of Aydınlar, situated in Atalar Village and located 27 km from Torul town, was once a vibrant place of Christian worship. This church is adorned with Christian frescoes that portray Jesus Christ in the Pantocrator pose, along with depictions of the Gospel writers and various scriptural passages on the walls. It was built in the 1850s by both the British and the Russians.

The church’s entrance features a rectangular opening with a flat lintel and an arched pediment. The eastern façade showcases a protruding apse, along with pastaphorion cells that are angled from the interior to the exterior in a half-rounded shape. The apse is adorned with a window that has detailed arrow-shaped patterns, while additional windows and niches are present on either side of the inner nave. Two separate columns divide the building’s three main sections in front of the entrance.

The largest part of the cathedral is the central section, which features a vaulted, cradle-type roof. The pillars at both ends link it to clearly defined arches on the sides, which are joined by round belts. The interior walls are covered with pale plaster paintings, which were later whitewashed during the Byzantine era.
