Virgin Mary (Panagia Theotokos) Church in Torul

Situated on the left bank of Çit Creek within the Büyükçit Village Valley in the Torul District, this monastery is believed to have been established around 890 or 900 AD by three monks named Mary Theotokos. The building underwent renovations during the Trabzon Komnenos era as well as in the 19th century.

The Virgin Mary (Panagia Theotokos) Church located in Torul measures approximately 12.5 by 8.6 meters and consists of three naves. Its entrance, positioned at the western corner, is crafted from marble. The roof structure has been partially destroyed, exposing the cradle vault ceiling, which can be seen through scaffolding inside the church. A chapel is found on the eastern side, adjacent to a cistern situated just behind it.

The entrance features a rectangular monumental door with a circular arch on the western facade. The space around the entrance is defined by outer columns topped with capitals. These are embellished with geometric patterns and stylized floral decorations on the capitals, jambs, and surrounding bands.

Inside, the church is divided into three naves separated by four columns. The central nave is broader than the flanking side apses. On either side of the central apse with rounded arches, there are elongated barrel-vaulted chapels designed in a semi-duplex style. The interior dome is topped with an eight-sided pendentive adorned with pendants and crenellations.
