Sobesos Ancient City

Sobesos Ancient City

The Sobesos Ancient City is situated near Sahinefendi Village, one of the many historic settlements in Cappadocia. Discovered by treasure hunters in 2002, it stands as the sole Roman ancient city in the area. Positioned along the route to Soganli Valley, this archaeological site attracts many visitors eager to uncover its historical treasures.

Excavations at the site have revealed important Roman-era remains such as the Roman Bath, Agora, Basilica, and Bouleterion. However, due to limited government support, archaeological research is restricted to only three months every two years.

The Roman Bath area features a hypocaust system that enabled underfloor heating as well as central heating. Adjacent to the bath complex is the open-air market called the "Agora", where everyday items like fruits, vegetables, and clothing were traded.

The Bouleterion is a square-shaped structure with stone walls that functioned much like a contemporary legislative assembly. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of such buildings in the Cappadocia region. The Basilica's mosaic showcasing cross motifs remains unmatched in quality among regional mosaics.

Surrounding the basilica lies the cemetery, and some of the buried remains are displayed in nearby churches, including the Goreme Open Air Museum. The Sobesos Ancient City offers a fascinating insight into Cappadocia's illustrious Roman heritage and is a highly recommended destination for enthusiasts of ancient cultures.
