Ortahisar Town Ortahisar is a delightful travel destination celebrated for its warm-hearted residents, distinctive stone architecture, scenic narrow lanes, and remarkable ancient churches. The town is named after its most iconic feature — a towering rock formation shaped like a castle, standing an impressive 90 meters tall. Over the years, natural erosion has exposed the interior chambers of this formation, which can be explored via a staircase that offers panoramic views of the Ortahisar valleys and the snow-covered summit of Mt. Erciyes. Perfectly positioned among the popular tourist hubs of Goreme, Urgup, Uchisar, and Nevsehir, Ortahisar has become a must-visit destination for visitors to the region. The town features a unique natural air-conditioning system, with rock-carved doorways leading to cool storage areas used for keeping local produce fresh in a naturally chilled environment. Ortahisar features the historic Cambazlı Church, a remarkable 13th-century cross-in-square structure decorated with stunning wall frescoes. Although it currently serves as a storage space, the church’s historical significance and artistic details remain clearly visible. Just beyond the town limits lies the Üzümlü Church, home to frescoes that date back to the 8th or 9th century AD, contributing to the area's deep-rooted cultural legacy. While the town center showcases rock-carved buildings, much of Ortahisar is marked by simple, weathered homes. The upper residences are built using tuff blocks without any mortar, lending them a raw, rustic charm. In the past, many of these structures were used to store and preserve food. Larger buildings, typically limited to one or two stories, include outdoor staircases fashioned from tuff-stone slabs. Later constructions, especially those from the Roman era onward, often utilize white marble mortar blocks, though regional variations affect both size and building methods. For example, many homes have outer walls made of white limestone topped with a plain cornice. To the northeast of Ortahisar stands the Hallaç Monastery, a religious complex built around a walled courtyard. Notably, the entrances to this compound are situated lower than the courtyard level, making its design unique.
