Mustafapasa - Sinasos Mustafapaşa Village, historically known as Sinasos in Greek, is a well-known spot situated about 10 km from Göreme City in Cappadocia. The village is famous for its magnificent mansions featuring elaborately carved doors and window frames. These elegant residences were built between 150 and 200 years ago by families who amassed wealth through their successful fish trade in Istanbul. Up until 1924, the homes in Mustafapaşa were fully occupied. However, that year marked a population exchange between Greek and Turkish nationals, which mandated the forced relocation of all Christian residents from Turkey to Greece and all Turkish Muslim residents from Greece to Turkey. Official figures indicate that approximately 1.2 million Christians departed from Turkey, while about 600,000 Turkish Muslims migrated from Greece. Before the population exchange, the village of Sinasos was home to more than 5,000 residents. Following the exchange, however, the village saw a sharp decline in population, with only about 1,700 new settlers moving in. Consequently, the majority of the homes were left empty and exposed to decay for many years. Despite this downturn, the village still features three remarkable churches: the Constantine and Helena Church, the Church of St. Basile, and the Church of St. Nicholas. The first church is located at the heart of the village and is annually used by vicars to conduct special ceremonies on behalf of their patriarchs. Its architectural style dates back to 1729, with significant restoration work done in 1851. The church’s façade is adorned with detailed reliefs depicting angels, dragons, eagles, and grapevine motifs. The Church of St. Basile, located just outside the village, showcases 19th-century frescoes with a more modern artistic style. The original artwork and layout were entirely redone to reflect the aesthetics of the 19th century. Finally, the monastery and church of St. Nicholas, found in the first valley, has undergone complete restoration in recent years, preserving its historical significance.
