Zinciriye Madrasa

Zinciriye Madrasa

Zinciriye Madrasa, also known as the Isa Bey Madrasa, was built in 1385 by Melik Necmeddin Isa bin Muzaffer Davud bin El Melik Salih, the final Artuqid Sultan to govern in Mardin. Locally, it is called Zinciriye Madrasa due to its distinctive cusped domes situated on the eastern and western ends, along with its striking monumental entrance portal on the eastern facade.

The structure consists of a spacious courtyard, two levels containing a mosque and crypts, along with additional sections. The main entrance is through the central porch, accessible via corridors, or alternatively through an opening in the star-shaped vault at the core of the building.

At the heart of the mosque sits a squinched dome decorated with intricate inlaid patterns. A mihrab located in a corridor on the southern side leads to a raised chamber covered by another squinched dome, which appears to function as a tomb.

While most rooms on the upper floor are modest in size, they historically served as classrooms for madrasa students. Melik Necmeddin Isa, a noble who resisted Timur’s first invasion of Mardin and was subsequently imprisoned, was also detained here. The Mardin Museum was once housed within Zinciriye Madrasa before relocating to its own facility.
