Zilkale Castle Zilkale Castle is an impressive historical fortress located in the Fırtına Valley within the Pontic Mountains. It stands as one of the most important landmarks in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize Province, in Turkey’s Black Sea Region. Known as one of the most mysterious and romantic castles in the country, it is beautifully set among dense forests and flowing waterfalls, perched on the edge of a steep valley. Situated at an altitude of 1,130 meters (3,710 feet), Zilkale Castle overlooks the Fırtına River, which flows about 380 meters (1,250 feet) below. The bridge located to the southeast of the castle stands at an elevation of approximately 750 meters (2,460 feet). Historical records indicate that Zilkale Castle was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The fortress is divided into three main sections: the Outer Castle, the Middle Castle, and the Inner Castle. Visitors reach the Outer Castle entrance by following a path heading northwest. The Middle Castle houses soldiers’ barracks, a possible chapel, and a main tower featuring arched windows on its eastern side and narrow loopholes on the remaining sides.
