The Lycian Way

The Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is a long-distance hiking route stretching approximately 540 kilometers, which typically takes about 29 days to hike from start to finish. This trail runs along the coastline of Lycia in southern Turkey and follows a network of ancient Roman and Lycian roads, footpaths, and mule tracks. The trail was established by Kate Clow in 1999 with the aim of preserving and highlighting some of Turkey’s historic pathways, making it the country’s first official long-distance walking route.

The ancient region of Lycia was located in southwestern Anatolia, covering areas that correspond to today’s Muğla and Antalya provinces along the Mediterranean coast. This region consisted of various city-states that founded notable cities such as Xanthos, Patara, Myra, Pinara, Tlos, Olympos, and Phaselis. These city-states formed an alliance known as the Lycian League.

Due to the steep gradients along the route, the trail is not suitable for mountain biking. However, hikers may find walking sticks helpful as they provide stability on challenging sections and offer protection against snakes, which often hide in dry shrubbery or wooded areas during the hot summer season.

The Lycian Way can be explored in various segments such as Hisarönü (Ovacık)-Faralya, Faralya-Kabak Bay, Kabak Bay-Alınca, Alınca-Yediburunlar, Yediburunlar-Gavurağılı, Gavurağılı-Patara, Patara-Kalkan, Kalkan-Sarıbelen-Gökçeören, Gökçeören-Kaş, Kaş-Kekova, Kekova-Demre, Demre-Alakilise-Finike, Karaöz-Cape Gelidonya-Adrasan, Adrasan-Olympos-Çıralı, Çıralı-Beycik, Çıralı-Tekirova, Tekirova-Phaselis-Gedelme, Beycik-Tahtalı Dağı-Gedelme, Gedelme-Göynük, Göynük-Hisarçandırı, and Hisarçandırı-Geyikbayırı.

Along the trail, hikers will pass many notable sites including Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, Faralya, Kabak Bay, Cennet Bay, Korsan Bay, the ancient city of Letoon (the historic capital of Lycia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Seydikemer), Sidyma, Bel, Gavurağılı, Kınık (Xanthos), Akbel, Gelemiş village, the ruins of Patara (once the Lycian capital), Kalkan, Sarıbelen, Gökçeören, Kaş (Antiphellos), Üçağız, Kale, Demre (Myra), Kumluca, Belören, Zeytin, Alakilise, İncegeriş Hill (1,811 m / 5,942 ft), Belos, Finike, Mavikent, Karaöz, the lighthouse at Cape Gelidonya (the southernmost point of Lycia), Adrasan, Olympos, and Çıralı.
