Telmessos Ancient City and Tomb of Amyntas

Telmessos, originally called 'Telebehi' in the Lycian language, was the largest city in Lycia and a part of the Lycian Union. The modern town of Fethiye now stands on its location, featuring a well-sheltered harbor protected by an island, unlike the more open Fethiye Bay. Epigraphic evidence shows that Telmessos has been continuously settled since its foundation.

The remains of Telmessos, situated close to Fethiye, rank among the most remarkable historical sites in the area. These include rock-cut tombs and a 6,000-seat theater constructed during the early Roman era and renovated in the 2nd century BC. A museum is also present on the premises.

The Lycian tombs stand out as some of the most iconic landmarks of the Telmessos Ancient City. The most splendid and renowned is the tomb of King Amyntas (son of Hermagios), dating back to the 4th century BC, featuring two pillars engraved with the king’s name in the Lycian language. The majesty of the tomb becomes more striking as you approach it.

Reaching the tomb requires climbing a staircase that ascends the mountain. Although the climb has many steps and can be tiring, the reward is immense once you arrive at the top to see the colossal tomb of Amyntas, considered one of Turkey’s most extraordinary tombs.
