Taskale Grain Warehouses & Manazan Caves Situated 45 kilometers from Karaman, Turkey, the Taşkale grain warehouses present an extraordinary architectural marvel unmatched anywhere else in the world. These limestone structures, over 800 years old, were meticulously hand-carved and have preserved their original characteristics to this day. Reaching depths of up to 40 meters and varying in height, the granaries feature tall walls sculpted to form separate storage chambers for grain. The most recent granary, constructed 150 years ago, is built entirely from artificial materials. Each chamber is sealed with a small door crafted from juniper wood, approximately fifty to sixty centimeters in size. These natural rock storage chambers have a capacity ranging from 5 to 60 tons and are opened individually to store different products. Constructed from tuff blocks, they allow air circulation throughout all seasons and can be accessed by pressing specific spots on the surface known as "bounce." The Manazan Cave village, originating from the 6th and 7th centuries during the Byzantine Empire, consists of small living spaces carved into a steep rock face. These rooms have withstood centuries of conflict in Central Anatolia and remain well-preserved today, spanning up to five stories high and extending across 3 kilometers of cliffs. This elaborate network of caves and tunnels once contained churches, storage areas, family dwellings, and cemeteries, all situated high on the cliff walls. Although the village is no longer inhabited, residents of Taşkale still utilize the temperate caves for grain storage. The area is currently being developed to attract more tourism, making it a perfect destination for a day trip to experience something truly extraordinary and unique.
