Sultanhani Caravanserai

Sultanhani Caravanserai

The Sultanhanı Caravanserai, also referred to as the Sultanhani Inn, is a historic roadside inn located along the Kayseri-Sivas highway in Turkey. Built between 1232 and 1236 during the rule of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I, it was designed to serve as a safe haven for merchants and travelers, offering them shelter, rest, and an opportunity to resupply.

Covering a total space of 3,900 square meters, it stands as the second-largest medieval caravanserai in Turkey, following the Sultan Han near Aksaray. Positioned along major trade routes, the inn played a vital role in supporting travelers by offering essential services and lodging facilities.

Sultanhani Caravanserai

The Sultanhanı Caravanserai serves as a prime example of traditional Seljuk caravanserais. While many of these structures follow a similar architectural layout, each features distinct design elements. A standout characteristic of Sultanhanı is its central mosque, a rarity not commonly seen in other caravanserais.

The exterior of the structure gives off a fortified impression, highlighted by an impressive entrance decorated with finely crafted stonework, including a vaulted muqarnas canopy. Once inside, visitors find a large open courtyard surrounded by arcades. At the center stands a small, elevated square chamber—a mosque—raised on four columns, accessible via a staircase located on its northern side. The façade is embellished with geometric rosettes, double-knotted borders, and dragon motifs facing each other, showcasing Seljuk artistry.

At the opposite end of the courtyard, roughly fifty meters from the main entrance, lies another portal that opens into the "winter hall". This area is adorned with exceptional examples of Seljuk stone carvings, including mythical animal figures such as lions with angelic heads and detailed dragon motifs.
