Selahaddin Eyyubi Mosque or Saint Johannes Prodromos Addai Church

The Selahaddin Eyyubi Mosque, which is also referred to as the Saint Johannes Prodromos Addai Church, stands as an impressive historic monument situated in the center of Sanliurfa. It is regarded as one of the most extensive buildings of its type within the city.

The church was originally constructed in the 19th century atop the remains of the Church of St. John the Baptist, which had been established by Bishop Nona in 457 AD. Known as the largest church in the area, it was often called a cathedral. After a long period of abandonment, the structure was restored and reopened as a Muslim place of worship in 1993.

The mosque’s entrance is located on the west side, and the main prayer hall was built incorporating the narthex of the former church. The building features large windows that provide abundant natural light, and still preserves half-columns along with intricately carved dragons from the original edifice.

Since Selahaddin Eyyubi used this building as a mosque for some time, it was named in his honor.
