Saint Theodore Tagar Church Nestled in Yeşilöz Village, about 10 kilometers southeast of Ürgüp, the Saint Theodore Church stands out with its distinctive "Three-Leaf Clover Design", a rare architectural layout among the region’s rock-carved churches. Upon entry, turning to the left leads visitors to the naos via the western exedra. The naos features a central square area formed by three interconnected semicircular sections. The main apse, positioned on the eastern side, is elevated above floor level. Owing to this architectural configuration, the altar is located on the inner wall of the central apse. The Deesis composition is prominently displayed on the main apse and the north-eastern exedra semi-domes, portraying Jesus alongside Mary, John the Baptist, and the archangels Michael and Gabriel. Jesus is shown holding a book in one hand while raising the other in a gesture of blessing. His head is surrounded by a circular halo featuring five stars. Below him, two bust figures labeled Ioakim and Anna appear near his feet. A horizontal band separates the Deesis scene from the figures of seven bishops, part of a group of nine. These include St. Germanios, St. Balsios, St. Ephipanios (listed twice), St. Gregorios, St. Basileios, and St. Ioannes Chrysostomos. Another depiction of Jesus as a bust can be found in the apse, where he holds a book in his left hand and blesses with his right. John the Baptist stands on his right, while Mary stands to his left, gesturing toward Jesus. Between their knees are two additional busts within round medallions. On either side of the halo next to John is St. Julietta, and beside Mary is St. Kiryakos. The church also features a wide array of religious artwork, including scenes from the life of Jesus and various saints. A row of round portraits on the lower ceiling displays the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, Christian soldiers executed by the Romans in AD 306. Additionally, six Old Testament prophets—including Solomon and David—are depicted in the arch of the apse. Saint Theodore and Saint George are also represented on the lower right side of the southern wall. Together, these elements make Saint Theodore Church a remarkable testament to the area's rich spiritual and artistic heritage.
