Rustem Pasha Mosque & Complex

The Rustem Pasha Mosque, situated in present-day Tekirdag, was built during the mid-1500s under the patronage of Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha. Constructed primarily from limestone, the mosque stands out for its elegant architectural style, reflecting Sinan's exceptional craftsmanship. The entrance is adorned with inlaid ivory set into walnut wood, and its doorways display intricate geometric patterns.

Rustem Pasha Mosque & Complex

The Rustem Pasha Mosque and Complex features several components, including a covered bazaar, madrasah, and library. Historically, it is believed to have also served as a caravanserai and soup kitchen. The mosque is designed with a modest layout, incorporating a rectangular mihrab and decorative plaster reliefs of floral and wreath motifs on the dome. The main prayer hall has concave walls with window openings along the drum supporting the dome, still displaying their vivid original colors. A single minaret is placed along the northeast wall and is connected to the mosque’s main entrance via an arched walkway and a porch located at the southwestern corner.

Though the library, bath, and madrasah on the eastern side are now in ruins, the covered bazaar with six domes to the west has been renovated by the General Directorate for Foundations. The tomb of Rustem Pasha, the mosque's founder, lies in the Şehzade Mosque Garden in Istanbul. In recent years, a new covered bazaar has also been added on the side facing the Marmara Sea by the Prefect’s Office.
