Rize Castle

Rize Castle

Perched atop a hill to the southwest of the city center, the historic Rize Castle is a centuries-old fortress that provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city below for its visitors.

Rize Castle

The structure of Rize Castle consists of two main parts: the citadel and the lower fortress. The citadel is thought to have been constructed during the Byzantine era, under the rule of Emperor Justinian I (r. 527–565), while the lower fortress was added later, around the 13th century AD.

Built with a combination of ashlar stone and mortar, the castle walls vary in height from 6 to 20 meters and in thickness from 2 to 3 meters (approximately 6.6 to 9.8 feet). The corners of the fortifications are reinforced with cylindrical bastions, and the towers exhibit diverse shapes—square, rectangular, or circular when viewed from above.

Regrettably, portions of the fortress walls are now obscured beneath modern buildings and urban roads. Nonetheless, in 1989, efforts were made to restore the southern sections of the ancient city walls, reviving some of its original grandeur.
