General Info

Cappadocia is both an ancient and modern name for an extraordinary region located in Central Anatolia. This geological marvel covers a smaller triangular area stretching from Urgup to Avanos and Uchisar. The valleys of Goreme, Ihlara, and Soganli are the primary sites where historic settlements flourished in Cappadocia.

The most prominent settlement developed around Goreme. Today, in the Open Air Museum, you can explore numerous rock-carved churches clustered together, many hewn from solid rock. It is estimated that Cappadocia houses more than 600 rock-cut churches. These underground cities and churches were crafted by inhabitants seeking refuge from Roman soldiers and later from Arab invasions, providing them shelter and protection during turbulent times.

Over time, the lava from three volcanoes solidified as it cooled, compressing under its own weight. These hardened volcanic rocks have been naturally sculpted into fascinating forms such as capstones, pyramids, and distinctive conical shapes topped with dark caps, known as fairy chimneys. These formations continue to evolve today, contributing to Cappadocia’s unique landscape.
