During the Roman era, Christianity spread rapidly in the 2nd century AD, resulting in conflicts between Christians and idol-worshipping priests. Consequently, many underground cities were constructed by Christians in Cappadocia to serve as shelters and places of worship.

Situated within the boundaries of Kepez Village and administratively connected to the Mucur district of Kirsehir, the Kepez Underground City lies west of the Ankara highway. It is located approximately 14 km from the Ankara highway and 10 km from the Aksaray highway. The city’s well-planned and organized structure has consistently attracted visitors. It comprises three clusters of rectangular living spaces, all linked by galleries and tunnels.
