Karatay Caravanserai

Karatay Caravanserai

Situated in the village of Karadayı, approximately 50 km east of Kayseri along the Pınarbaşı-Malatya Highway, the Karatay Han is a historic caravanserai that played a vital role in serving the Yabunlu Bazaar, a prominent trading center during the 13th century.

Karatay Caravanserai

The construction of the han started during the reign of Alaeddin Keykubad and was finalized between 1240-1241 under the rule of his successor. It stands as one of the most well-preserved hans in Anatolia and serves as a remarkable example of Seljuk architectural mastery. The han is especially renowned for its ornate relief carvings on the walls and pillars. Uniquely, the complex was originally designed to include an integrated bathhouse, mosque, and infirmary, all carefully planned within the building’s layout.

The han is oriented along a north-south axis and consists of a covered lodging area built first, accompanied by an open courtyard featuring service buildings. Both areas have entrances facing south. The courtyard is fully open, with the mosque situated on the right and arcaded walkways on the left. The eastern side showcases a burial chamber adorned with a rectangular frieze decorated with animal motifs, geometric designs, and bird figures.
