Horoztepe Mound

Horoztepe Mound

Horoztepe mound, situated east of the Erbaa district in Tokat province, is a large, circular structure measuring around 300 meters in diameter. Its form and the ornamental artifacts uncovered inside resemble those found at Alacahöyük, which is one of Turkey's most important archaeological sites.

Located 5 meters above the road level on the eastern side and about 15 meters above the stream level on the western side, the Horoztepe mound holds numerous pottery shards dating back to the Early Bronze Age and the Hittite era.

Archaeological digs at Horoztepe revealed a tomb from around 3000 BC, containing valuable metal and gold jewelry, alongside a gold and bronze statuette depicting a woman nursing her child. This statuette is currently exhibited at the Ankara Anatolian Civilizations Museum.

Other remarkable finds from the site include bull statuettes, a bronze spear tip, a systrum, a dagger, wedge-shaped and handled axes, ribbon-style handles, a deer figurine, a spouted teapot, deep bowls, bowls both with and without handles, a mirror, a sun disk, a ring, and a Kirmen belt buckle.
