Haleplibahce Mosaic Museum Sanliurfa is a historic city famous for its stunning mosaics located nearby. The ruins of the ancient Greek city of Edessa lie adjacent to the Halil-ur Rahman Pool in the center of Sanliurfa, featuring several vibrant and finely crafted Haleplibahce mosaics. The mosaics uncovered in Haleplibahce are displayed at the Haleplibahce Mosaic Museum. These works represent the earliest known portrayals of the Amazons warrior queen worldwide—created with meticulous detail using stones sourced from the Euphrates River. The mosaics not only serve as an exquisite representation of Eastern culture but are also regarded as some of the most precious artworks due to their construction with only 4mm2 colored stones. The art of mosaic is particularly mesmerizing because of the intricate detail these tiny stones achieve, creating expansive artworks that fill entire rooms and surpass ordinary human imagination. Orpheus Mosaic: The Orpheus Mosaic is the oldest piece among the mosaics found in Edessa. Created in 194 AD, it bears the signature of its artist, Bar Saged. It is exceedingly uncommon for mosaics to be signed, making the Orpheus Mosaic a rare and valuable example in this regard. Ktisis Mosaic: This mosaic features the bust of the goddess Ktisis, crowned with pearls and precious stones. Her earrings mirror this design, and she wears gold rings adorned with oval-shaped pearls on her fingers. Achilleus’ Life Mosaic: The main panel on this wall portrays scenes from the life of Achilles. It features baby Achilles nursing from his caretakers, the farewell scene of Troy War I where he waves goodbye to his mother, death goddesses reaching out to seize his thread of life as he is immersed in the Styx River to gain immortality before being taken away by the wise Kheiron. Also depicted is Thetis sorrowfully following him as he leaves his family to fulfill his destined fate. Surrounding the central panel, a border illustrates figures enjoying rural life—playing musical instruments, running through fields, socializing outdoors, and tending horses.
