Guzelyurt Village

Guzelyurt Village

Situated in the heart of Cappadocia, the town of Güzelyurt—historically known as Gelveri—once hosted a vibrant community of Christian Orthodox families. However, in 1924, a compulsory population exchange between Turkey and Greece required all Christian residents to relocate to Greece, while Muslim citizens living in Greece were resettled in Turkey.

This large-scale migration resulted in numerous homes being left vacant throughout the town. Sadly, many of these abandoned houses have deteriorated over time and have remained in a state of neglect for many years.

Guzelyurt Village

Although its past holds sorrowful memories, Güzelyurt still preserves numerous historic churches, the most notable being the Church of Saint Gregorius Ologos Nazianzus. Originally constructed in 385 AD, it stands as the oldest recorded church in Cappadocia and its surrounding areas. Once a key symbol of the region’s vibrant Christian heritage, the church was later converted into a mosque following the population exchange. Today, visitors can explore this sacred site and witness the scale of the Christian presence that once flourished in Güzelyurt.

Beyond this ancient structure, Güzelyurt also features two underground cities and a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint overlooking both the St. Gregory Church and the majestic Mount Hasan, one of Cappadocia's iconic volcanoes. On your way to the viewpoint, be sure to notice the historic Sivisli Church, which was built in the 19th century and remains a remarkable example of local religious architecture.

In summary, Güzelyurt is a town rich in history and an essential destination for anyone eager to explore the deep cultural roots of Cappadocia.
