Fertek Church

The Fertek Church, situated in Fertek Village near the heart of Niğde, was constructed by Hacı Nicola and consecrated for worship in 1837. An inscription in Karamanli Turkish on the narthex’s facade marks the year of its establishment.

This basilica, featuring three aisles, is built using yellowish dressed stone and basalt masonry. It includes a rounded "U"-shaped narthex on the east side and is supported internally by cylindrical columns. The ceilings of the narthex display intricate woodwork, complemented by floor paintings and carved capitals adorning the columns at the entrance. The upper gallery is held up by five main pillars alongside 28 smaller columns.

The hand-painted motifs on the vaulted ceiling are truly remarkable. Though hidden behind curtains, the frescoes remain well-preserved and are still visible. The building was transformed into a mosque in 1924, following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey.

Following the conversion, a pulpit and mihrab were installed inside. The apses are divided from the main hall by a partition wall, with windows on the sides allowing access to adjoining spaces. The left apse contains a niche, and the main area, corner sections, and apses are all topped externally by a double chamfered roof.

The galleries running north to south are covered by an upper roof and supported by pillars with simple capitals. Despite its conversion into a mosque, the Fertek Church continues to hold its historic and cultural importance.
