General Info

Cappadocia, a name both ancient and modern, refers to a breathtaking region in Central Anatolia. This geological marvel covers a smaller triangular area stretching from Urgup to Avanos and Uchisar. The valleys of Goreme, Ihlara, and Soganli are the primary areas where settlements thrived in Cappadocia.

The most prominent settlement was located in the Goreme area. In the open-air museum today, you can explore numerous churches, many of which were carved from solid rock. It is believed that there are over 600 rock-cut churches in Cappadocia. The people who sought refuge from Roman soldiers and later Arab invasions carved these tough rocks and built underground cities as a means of defense against attacks.

Although the lava has solidified, it was compressed under its own weight, forming tough rocks. The lava from three volcanoes erupted over geologic time, shaping the landscape into various forms. Over time, these rocks have taken on unique shapes, creating stunning features such as capstones, pyramids, and conical structures with dark-colored tops, known as fairy chimneys.
