Asarkale Rock Tombs

Situated about 30 kilometers to the south of Bafra District and near the Altınkaya Dam in Samsun, the Asarkale Rock Tombs are a must-visit destination. A staircase leads up to a stone fortress featuring concealed shelters and secret tunnels that were historically used as places to hide.

Asarkale Rock Tombs

Positioned strategically within the Paphlagonia Region, Asarkale was specifically constructed for military purposes. As warfare evolved, tombs from the Hellenistic Age were carved into the rock. It is believed that three such tombs from this era remain, as indicated by their structure, design, and construction methods.

The three rock tombs, dating back to the 3rd century BC during the Hellenistic Period, are spread across different locations. One tomb is positioned near the river and can be accessed from there, while the other two are found on the hillside of the ancient castle. The tunnel, initially designed for military use, provided access to the river before roads were paved with asphalt.

The first tomb, located on the steep northern slope of Asarkale, stands significantly above the road level. It is a classic example of Pontos-Paphlagonia rock tombs, featuring a triangular pediment and a façade with five columns. The second tomb is situated on the steep rock on the eastern bank of the Kızılırmak River and also has a triangular pediment and four columns. The third tomb, which also has four columns, is positioned on the rock south of Asarkale and remains higher than the road level. This tomb is distinct from the other two types of tombs.
