Ardahan Castle

Ardahan Castle, situated in the Halil Efendi District of the city, was built in the 16th century under the command of Suleiman the Magnificent. The castle features a rectangular design with several towers, constructed using finely cut stone and Khorasan mortar, showcasing the unique masonry techniques of the time. Its polygonal layout, strategic positioning, and resemblance to the Rumeli Fortress distinguish it from other castles throughout Turkey.

Excavations at Ardahan Castle have revealed traces of an ancient settlement that dates back to the Early Bronze Age, further enhancing its historical value. The large western gate of the castle is adorned with an Arabic inscription that reads: "This was built in the name of Sultan Suleiman the Great, son of Selim Khan, the master of the seas and lands of the Arab, Greek, and Persian worlds. May his property endure until the end of time." This inscription stands as a lasting tribute to the castle's significance and legacy.
