Anzer Plateau and Honey Nestled 35 km southwest of the Ikizdere district in Rize, the Anzer Plateau is a captivating natural retreat that includes both the Lower Anzer (Ciceklikoy) and Upper Anzer (Ballikoy) regions. This scenic highland is located approximately 54 km from the city center of Rize. Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and renowned honey production, Anzer Plateau attracts both tourists and locals. The area is rich in endemic floral species, which contribute to the exceptional quality of its honey — widely regarded as among the finest in the world. Studies by British-German botanists have identified approximately 450 to 500 flower species thriving in the Anzer Plateau, with around 80 to 90 of them being endemic to the area. These unique flowers grow exclusively in Ballikoy Anzer, where bees collect their nectar to produce a special honey believed to have medicinal properties. The plateau is particularly enchanting in the first week of June, when snowdrops emerge amidst the melting snow. Bees begin foraging for nectar starting in July, and by August, the honey becomes ready for collection. Beekeepers typically harvest the honey in the first or second week of August, depending on climate conditions. Factors such as unfavorable weather or premature grass cutting in the meadows can affect the yield. In some years, production is extremely low or even nonexistent, contributing to Anzer honey’s reputation as one of the most valuable and costly honeys in the world. Anzer honey is not commonly used as a regular breakfast item; rather, it is valued for its therapeutic benefits in addressing various health issues. Nonetheless, it must be consumed with care — taking more than two teaspoons daily can pose serious health risks.
