The Aidesim Mosaic Basilica

Situated about 200 meters to the southwest of Oylum Höyük, the Aidesim Mosaic Basilica stands as a remarkable example of early Christian architecture. Built from black basalt stone and limestone, this structure dates back to the 6th century AD. The basilica is designed with three naves, each supported by two rows of columns on either side, and features an entrance on the western side.

During excavations, a large number of Roman and Medieval coins, column bases, and various other artifacts were uncovered. The interior of the basilica features exquisite floral patterns crafted using five distinct colors, including red, white, brown, gray, and black. This elaborate design spans an area of 800 square meters, with geometric shapes predominantly composed of square motifs and zigzag patterns. The design also incorporates Maltese crosses, a hallmark of Early Byzantine mosaics. Additionally, many of the floor mosaic designs display a square or lozenge overlap.

The mosaics are reported to be in remarkable condition, and to ensure their preservation, restoration efforts were initiated a few years ago, with the work being completed in 2017.
