Acarlar Floodplain Forest

Often called lagoons, the flooded coastal landscape is formed by sandbars that separate the sea from the land. The Acarlar Floodplain Forest is situated along the boundary of the Karasu-Kaynarca District and lies about 700 m (2,300 ft) from the coastline, covering an area of 1,562 ha (3,860 acres). The region features deep waters, with some areas reaching up to 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) in depth during the summer months when rainfall is limited.

The floodplain is bordered by towering sand dunes to the north, along the Black Sea, and by low hills to the south, with an average elevation of 100 m. Excess water that exceeds flood levels flows into the Okçu Creek, which merges with the Sakarya River approximately 6 km to the east.

The Acarlar Floodplain Forest is home to a diverse range of local plant and animal species. It also serves as a key breeding and wintering site for migratory birds, making it an important ecological sanctuary in the area.
