The Floating Islands (Yuzen Adalar) The Floating Islands (also called Yuzen Adalar) are a remarkable natural wonder found in Bingöl Province, Turkey. This extraordinary feature is composed of three buoyant islands formed by aquatic vegetation, appearing like small islands drifting on the surface of Lake Aksakal. Nestled amid gently rolling hills, Lake Aksakal lies on a flat plain surrounded by three mountain ranges. The lake is fed by underground springs, which help maintain a consistent water level year-round. Due to their buoyant nature, the floating islands can be easily shifted by applying pressure on one side and stepping off. The Floating Islands (Yuzen Adalar) support a rich variety of plant life, including grasses, couchgrass, and several types of aquatic shrubs and trees. The soil is tightly interlaced with this vegetation, forming a distinctive ecosystem that extends across an area of approximately 38,400 square meters. The lake itself covers more than 300 square meters and reaches depths exceeding 50 meters, featuring crystal-clear, fresh water free from mineral salts. This natural formation was officially designated as a protected natural monument in 2003, inviting visitors to experience this extraordinary site.
