Noah’s Ark

Noah’s Ark

According to sacred scriptures, Noah's Ark is believed to have come to rest on Ağrı Mountain following the great flood. Presently, it is thought that the Ark lies approximately 3.5 km from the Turkish-Iranian border road, situated to the south of Ağrı Mountain, between the villages of Telçeker and Mesar. The regions referred to as Noah's Lost City and the Trail of Noah's Ark are also considered potential sites connected to this holy story.

Noah’s Ark

The idea that the Ark came to rest on a mountain has existed for many centuries. The earliest recorded mention dates back to 1876, when Armenian priests from Iran told visitors to Ağrı that the Ark had landed there and was visible from Akdamar Island. Later, in 1979, an Iranian traveler observed resemblances between Azerbaijan’s Shamkhor Valley and ancient Tabriz, fueling speculation about the story’s authenticity. However, it was not until 1987 that a geologist working with natural gas exploration teams noticed scattered stones on the slopes of the Turkmenbashy Mountains. After sharing his observations with a Turkish archaeologist from the local museum, both visited the site together to investigate further.

Multiple pieces of petrified wood have been discovered on the flanks of Mount Ararat, with over 100 fragments found in various locations thought to be remnants of Noah’s Ark. Despite this, archaeologists have yet to conclusively verify that this was the Ark’s final resting place. Other sites along the presumed route, such as Turkmenbashy Mountain and Mount Suleiman, show similar geological traits and evidence of ancient forests. Some believe the Ark may have landed on these mountains, although the supporting evidence remains largely circumstantial. The dominant theory continues to favor Mount Ararat as the landing site. While the gathered evidence points towards a connection with Noah’s Ark, the exact location remains unconfirmed, with researchers still seeking more definitive proof.
