Mor Petrus and Mor Paulus Church

The historic Mor Petrus and Mor Paulus Church is located in the heart of Adiyaman city, within the Mara neighbourhood. Based on Syriac inscriptions found on its doorways, the church is believed to have been built during the 4th or 5th century and has been restored multiple times over the centuries.

Situated near the foundation of the Virgin Mary Church, which was established as the first metropolitanate in 1701, the Mor Petrus and Mor Paulus Church has served the Syriac community around Adiyaman since its early days. The first Metropolitan appointed here was Mor Abhay Eyup, whose tomb remains preserved in the churchyard.

The last Metropolitan to hold this role was Mor Kurillos Mansur Bishop Hallo of Mardin, and his tomb is located within the church's altar area. The Syriac people established numerous churches and monasteries across towns such as Gerger and Samsat, which functioned as both places of worship and centers of education. These institutions nurtured prominent spiritual and scholarly figures like Lukyanus from Samsat.

The church was constructed in the traditional style of Syriac stone masons, who were brought from Urfa during the 19th century to shape the church as it stands today. Serving generations of worshippers, it remains a vital religious landmark for the Syriac community.
