Gerger Castle

Gerger Castle

Gerger Castle stands in the Oymakli village, situated within the Gerger District of Adiyaman. This historic fortress was initially constructed by Arsemes during the 3rd century BCE, positioned along the western shores of the Euphrates River.

Gerger Castle

As a frontier fortification of the Commagene Kingdom, Gerger Castle functioned as a strategic observation point for monitoring those crossing the river. Perched atop rugged cliffs, the structure is composed of both a Lower and an Upper Castle. It also held significance as the kingdom’s earliest administrative hub and was used as a sacred sanctuary.

Constructed with durable stone walls, the fortress is enveloped by towering rocky terrain. Behind the monument lies a relief inscription attributed to King Samos, the father of Mithridates Callinicus, who ruled over Commagene. King Samos was also the founder of the ancient city of Somosata, later known as Samsat.
