El Aman Caravanserai

El Aman Caravanserai

Located in the Amble Plain of the Bitlis region, the El Aman Caravanserai was built during the Ottoman period by Hüsrev Pasha, the Beylerbey of Van, in the 16th century. This historical inn is positioned along the Silk Road, an ancient trade route that connected the East and West, fostering the exchange of goods, culture, and ideas. The El Aman Caravanserai is a large establishment that provided essential services such as food, water, and shelter for travelers over many centuries. It includes a winter room, bread ovens, and stables designed to keep animals warm during cold weather.

The exact construction date of this caravanserai remains unknown, as there are no surviving inscriptions to confirm its origins. However, it is widely believed to have been built in the 16th century on the Rahva Plain, where the Bitlis-Muş and Van routes intersect. This area posed serious challenges for caravans, especially during winter, due to the steep and winding mountain pass nearby. Originally designed to offer refuge to travelers, the caravanserai eventually expanded into a more functional and extensive complex.

The structure is divided into five main parts: a central courtyard, a mosque, a bathhouse, a pool, and 160 individual rooms. Built from solid black stone, the building stretches 90 meters in length and 70 meters in width, bearing the legacy of more than 600 years of history. With multiple additions made over time, it now holds the title of the largest caravanserai in Anatolia by surface area.
