Ciragan Palace

Ciragan Palace

Çırağan Palace, a luxurious five-star property within the Kempinski Hotels collection, is located along the European side of the Bosporus, nestled between the neighborhoods of Beşiktaş and Ortaköy in Istanbul.

Designed by the Armenian architect Nichoği Balyan, Çırağan Palace was constructed in 1863 under the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. The interior walls and roof of the palace were made from wood, while the exterior was adorned with vibrant marble. A bridge connects the palace to Yıldız Palace, perched on a hill behind it. The palace is encircled by a tall garden wall, ensuring privacy and seclusion from the outside world.

The construction and interior decoration of the palace were completed by 1872. However, Sultan Abdulaziz did not enjoy his magnificent residence for long, as he tragically took his own life in 1876 after being deposed. His successor, Sultan Murad V, briefly resided in the palace before being removed from power by his brother Abdul Hamid II due to mental health issues, and was confined to the palace for 93 days.

The palace, which has undergone significant changes throughout the years, was granted approval by Sultan Mehmed V during the Second Constitutional Monarchy to serve as a venue for Ottoman Parliament sessions on November 14, 1909. Unfortunately, only a few months later, on January 19, 1910, a devastating fire broke out, leaving much of the palace in ruins and only its outer walls standing. For many years afterward, it was known as "Şeref Stadı" and used as a football field by the Beşiktaş JK club in its gardens.

In 1987, the property was acquired by a Japanese company, which then restored the former imperial palace while simultaneously constructing a contemporary hotel complex within its grounds. The modern hotel opened its doors to guests in 1990, followed by the completion of the restored palace in 1992. Today, the palace serves as luxurious suites for the Kempinski Hotel and boasts two restaurants for the enjoyment of its guests. In the first quarter of 2007, the palace underwent another renovation to bring back its authentic baroque-style look with more vibrant colors.
